International news as England could go neutral, Gerrard does Scotland a favor, coronavirus connotations dominate

Neutral Opportunities

The international break is coming to the world of football for the third time since the start of the 2020/21 campaign. With the coronavirus pandemic dominating the world, players leaving the protection of their club bubbles to mingle with other players are risks.

This affects the upcoming match between England and Iceland. Denmark was recently removed from the UK travel corridor list, meaning anyone arriving from there will need to self-isolate for 14 days. Non-UK citizens are completely banned from entering from Denmark.

Iceland is set to travel to Copenhagen to play Denmark ahead of the England match. A draw in London is legally impossible under the current circumstances. Elite athletes are not exempt from this decision.

The FA is reportedly seeking clarification from the government, but a neutral meeting place may be the only option. This would spark controversy about how it would affect the integrity of the tournament.

Despite the absence of fans on the ground, it is debatable whether playing in a familiar setting gives players an advantage. However, if England were to lose the match on a neutral ground while Iceland could play all of their home matches in Reykjavík, whether the competition was "fair" could be contested.

Favor Gerrard

While the controversy surrounding international matches rages on, Steven Gerrard has done Scottish boss Steve Clarke a favor in his matches. With Rangers 4-0 against Hamilton at half-time, the former Liverpool captain sent star player Ryan Jack off the field.

“I made a substitution at half-time, just out of respect for the guys who play big international games. The game was at half-time, with all due respect, and I wanted to respect Jacko and the situation in Scotland,” said Gerrard.
